Background of the Mustafa Amir Murder Case

Mustafa Amir, a 23-year-old resident of DHA Karachi, was tragically abducted and murdered in January, and his case has since attracted widespread media attention. His abduction occurred on January 6, but it wasn't until February that Sindh Police provided details to the public. 

Six days after Mustafa's disappearance, security forces discovered a charred body in a vehicle at Dureji,  Balochistan, which had been set on fire. The body was later transported to the Edhi Foundation for identification. During a press conference on February 14, police revealed that Mustafa's acquaintances were the perpetrators behind his murder. 

Investigators confirmed that the body had been placed in the trunk of a car and set alight in Dureji, Balochistan. Amid the investigation, Sheraz Bukhari (also known as Shavez) was arrested and later confessed to his involvement in the crime. An extortion demand of Rs 20 million from Mustafa’s family surfaced, which led to an arrest warrant being issued for Armaghan Qureshi, who was allegedly behind the crime. On February 14, police disclosed the details of a violent, four-hour gunfight during an operation at Armaghan’s bungalow in DHA, Karachi. 

During the raid, blood samples were collected from a carpet in the suspect's residence, pointing to the fact that the dispute may have been linked to a conflict with a woman. Mustafa’s mother, in a video interview, later revealed that the same woman was involved in orchestrating the murder and had fled to the United States. Sheraz was initially detained by an anti-terrorism court (ATC) on February 15 but was released on February 21. Police came under scrutiny for failing to secure Armaghan’s custody.

 Legal experts highlighted procedural errors, including the failure to submit a petition for remand in line with the original FIR sections, especially Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, which became relevant in this case. The investigation was criticized for its mismanagement, leading to the suspension of three police officials. Documents revealed that Armaghan had a long history of criminal activity, including extortion, drug trafficking, kidnapping, and unlawful firearm possession.

 Investigation Developments and Court Proceedings On February 17, a judicial magistrate approved the exhumation of Mustafa's body for further examination. A three-member medical commission was appointed to conduct the investigation. Following this, on February 18, an ATC granted a four-day extension for police detention of Armaghan to facilitate the completion of the medical investigation. Interrogation documents from February 20 revealed that Mustafa and Armaghan had grown up together, lending credibility to Sheraz’s statements during questioning. According to the interrogation report, Armaghan had allegedly offered Mustafa an escape before ultimately setting him on fire. Investigators found the burned-out vehicle in Dureji, Balochistan, with prosecutors confirming that it contained Mustafa’s remains. The case took a complicated turn when Kamran Qureshi, Armaghan’s father, publicly denied all accusations against his son. 

He dismissed the allegations, claiming Mustafa had been involved in drug dealing with his son and that the entire situation was a conspiracy orchestrated by a police officer. Qureshi’s claims sparked confusion and added a layer of complexity to the investigation. On February 22, the ATC extended Armaghan and Sheraz’s detention for five additional days. 

DNA testing conducted on blood samples collected from the residence where Armaghan was staying revealed the presence of DNA from a woman involved in the crime. Police also apprehended four more individuals, one of whom confessed to supplying narcotics to Mustafa. Among those arrested was the son of a well-known television actor. DNA analysis eventually confirmed that the charred remains found in Balochistan were those of Mustafa Amir. On March 2, Sheraz recorded a confessional statement under Section 164, implicating Armaghan further. Investigations revealed that Armaghan was connected to at least 11 other criminal cases, further complicating the case. 

 As the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) continues to investigate, new revelations are expected. Authorities are under intense pressure to bring justice to Mustafa’s family, with investigators focusing on tracing a missing luxury truck, examining financial transactions, and uncovering any larger criminal network tied to Armaghan.
